French President Emmanuel Macron said he is “immensely proud” that France reached the football World Cup final and paid tribute to the “great” Moroccan team, Africa’s and the Arab world’s first ever semifinalist.

“This French team made me very proud”, Macron, who travelled to Qatar for the match, told reporters after the final whistle.

“I want the French people to enjoy this simple happiness.”

He also paid tribute to the Moroccan team’s performance this World Cup.

“I want to tell the Moroccans that they have a great team… they have nothing to be embarrassed about.”

The Moroccan team, nicknamed “the Atlas Lions” went out of the World Cup after losing 2-0 to France.

They were the first African and Arab nation to reach the penultimate stage of the competition.

Macron said he will return to Qatar on Sunday to attend the final, joking about being “too superstitious” to give a prediction for the final against Argentina.
